About Titanic: Part 1

Hey, Jammer's! CoolCat here with another post! And I'm here with my promised post about Titanic! I have been hard at work for about a week writing down what I wanted to put in this post. Though I could not fit every single detail I wanted in this post, I feel it will still be very informative! Now this will still be rather long, but its worth the read!  And who knows, if this post is a big hit, I can always make part two upon request! So without further ado, lets get learning!

Basic facts: The cost to build Titanic in 1909 was $7,500,000 million dollars. In todays time that would be equivalent to $182,488,738.18. (That's a lot of money!!) When Titanic set sail  April 10th, 1912 there were approximately 2,200 passengers on board. But Titanic's full capacity was 3,547 passengers. The Titanic was considered one of the biggest ships of its time. Passengers were separated by first class, second class, and third class. The price of a first class ticket cost $4,350 or $105,843.47 in todays dollars. The price of a second class ticket cost $60 or $1,459.91 in todays dollars. And the price of a third class ticket was $40 or $973.27 in todays dollars. First class passengers consisted of some of the most wealthy and famous celebrity passengers. For those of you who may not know, Titanic set sail April 10th, 1912 and hit an ice burg the night of April 14th, 1912. The Titanic sank 2 hours and 40 minutes after hitting the ice burg with more then 1,500 people still on board.

Now I will talk about some of the most well known first class passengers on board Titanic:

John Jacob Astor IV:

John Jacob Astor IV was the richest person on Titanic, and thought to be the richest in the world, with a net worth of $87 million, or $2,116,869,362.85 in todays dollars. He divorced his wife of 19 years and remarried one year later. There was a 29 year age gap between John and his new wife. John and his new pregnant wife, boarded Titanic as first class passengers, in hopes the gossip and press would die down about them, and their relationship. As Titanic was sinking, Johns wife was able to escape in Lifeboat 4. John died as he was denied access on the lifeboat, as it was ''women and children first.''

Benjamin Guggenheim:

Billionaire Benjamin Guggenheim was a first class passenger aboard the Titanic with his mistress. After helping with the rescues of women and children, he dressed up in his finest clothing, preparing to die. Him and another man were seen heading into the grand staircase, closing the door behind them. He was last heard to remark, ''We've dressed in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen.'' Mr. Guggenheim gave a message to a survivor to give to his wife in New York. He said to tell her ''I've done my best in doing my duty.'' The survivors last sight of the two men were them smoking cigars and drinking brandy. When Titanic sunk, they went down with the ship. But Mr. Guggenheim's mistress was able to escape in a lifeboat.

Margaret Brown:

Margaret Brown was a first class passenger of the Titanic, who would eventually become known as the ''Unsinkable Molly Brown.'' She was not born wealthy, but her and her husband became wealthy later in life. She got on a lifeboat with 27 other people, and the lifeboat could hold up to 65 people. She got into a dispute with the man in charge of the lifeboat she was on. She urged him to go back and rescue people in the water. His remark was ''There's no use going back, there's only a lot of stiffs out there. Its our lives now, not theirs.'' The cries for help in the water soon died. Mrs. Brown requested to the man, let the women row to keep us warm. He ignored her request and Mrs. Brown started passing out oars. He protested and swore at her, and at one point moved to physically stop her. She told him to stay put or she would throw him overboard. Others backed her up, telling the man to keep quite. Her act of bravery got her the nickname the ''Unsinkable Molly Brown.''

Isidor and Ida Straus:

Isidor and Ida Straus were first class passengers. Isidor was the co-owner of the famous department store known as Macy's. Ida his wife was offered a place in a lifeboat but she refused to leave her husband. She said ''I will not be separated from my husband, as we have lived, so we will die, together.'' They were last seen on deck arm in arm. His body was recovered, but hers was not. In a memorial for the couple is a Song of Soloman (8:7) which reads: ''Many waters cannot quench love- neither can the floods drown it.''

Before Titanic hit the ice burg, a conversation was overheard, and later retold by a survivor. The conversation was between the Captain  of the Titanic, Captain Smith, and the chairman of the White Star Line, which owned Titanic, Bruce Ismay. Their conversation was the following:

B. Ismay: So you have not lit the last four boilers?
Cap. Smith: No, I don't see the need. We are making excellent time.
B. Ismay: The press knows the size of the Titanic, now I want them to marvel at her speed. We must give them something new to print! This maiden voyage of Titanic must make headlines!
Cap. Smith: Mr. Ismay, I would prefer not to push the engines until they have been properly run in.
B. Ismay: Of course I'm just a passenger. I leave it in you're good offices to decide what's best. But what a glorious end to you're final crossing if we were to get into New York on Tuesday and surprise them all! Make the morning papers, retire with a bang, eh E.J?
Cap. Smith: ''Nods reluctantly''
B. Ismay: Good man.

Titanic was going faster than it should have with the several ice burg warnings they received from other ships during their voyage. If they would have been going at a slower speed, they might have been able to avoid the ice burg.

I hope you enjoyed these facts! There were more facts I wanted to put in, but I felt it would be way to long. But I hope you still enjoyed this! Comment down below if you knew any of these facts before, and what you learned! Also comment down below if you have seen the movie before.

P.S: The movie Titanic was based on these actual facts. The only fictional people in the movie were Jack, Jack's Friend, Rose, Rose's fiancé and family. The movie was very well made. Everything was made to look exactly how it looked in 1912.

As always, bye Jammer's! And ~Jam On!~

  2. Phenomenal post, Coolcat! I would absolutely love to see a part 2 ^.^!

I once tried to write a Titanic story, but I didn't have nearly this amount of facts. Although, I did know about Captain Smith, but I did not know about all the survivors stories. The one about Isidor and Ida was so sweet, and really showed that they cared about each other. That Bible verse really goes well with their story :)

    Awesome post!

    Remember, God made YOU!
